I am not trying to do anything with these numbers other than to point out that truly modest changes in the fat content of the diet can potentially have dramatic effects on the body weight. Now, I postpartum have not made allowances for factors such as the increase in energy expenditure postpartum that accompanies increases in body weight, so these figures are somewhat exaggerated. The point I want to make is that a small impact on fat intake can certainly have an impact on the overall body fat. To conclude, dietary postpartum fat reduction and increased physical activity are both important and effective strategies for primary prevention. I don't know how likely it is that we will ever get people committed to the level of physical activity necessary to reverse obesity. Getting the fat out of the diet can help people achieve a stable body weight at a lower body fat mass. Hence, it can prevent some of the obesity that we have seen despite the fact that people are eating fewer calories as a percent of fat, at least as documented in cross-sectional studies.
