The dilemma of obesity, however, is different from any other public health fattrack problem. Many public health threats are caused fattrack by external agents such as the West Nile Virus, SARS, HIV, fattrack and pollution. Obesity, on the other hand, is caused by the behavioral choices of the individual. Thus, it is often politely ignored and no longer noted as abnormal by many people. Instead of perceiving obesity as an alarming problem, the general public has slowly developed an attitude of polite indifference. Also, it results from an activity primarily beneficial to one’s health, unlike activities such as smoking or using illicit drugs. It seems to stem from a plethora of factors: genetic, environmental, biological, behavioral, and social. Debates rage across the scientific world about whether obesity is a “chronic, relapsing neurochemical disease,”5 or is instead the unpleasant result of willful overeating,11 a “self-inflicted condition brought about by behavioral choice.”12
