Fit young men average 15 percent body fat. Fit young women, whose bodies have a higher fat content than men, average 25 percent body function fat. The Army's upper limits are 20 percent for the youngest men and 30 percent for the youngest women. These figures allow for fat distribution on larger bodies and for a two-percent range of error in the measurement. The Army's standards, Newcomb said, are considerably more relaxed for soldiers 40 years and older: Males can tape out at 26 percent, and females at 36 percent. "When you get beyond those percentages, you're entering the threshold for increased risk of such obesity-related diseases as heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and cancer," Newcomb said.
