My contention, then, is that fat reduction may create an environment where gaining weight is a very tough thing to do relative new gen systems to an environment where fat intake is higher. Let me make a few comments about why this is more complex than just how much fat you eat. Everybody here is familiar with the energy balance equation. In order to maintain a stable body weight, energy in must equal energy new gen systems out. In the last 10 years, it has been appreciated that there must also be equivalence new gen systems between the amount of each major macronutrient fuel consumed with the amount that is oxidized. If you eat more fat than you burn, the fat compartment grows. If you eat more carbohydrate than you burn, the carbohydrate compartment grows. In a practical sense, body protein and carbohydrate stores are very small. A 24-hour supply of glycogen, maybe 500 gm at the most, is about it for carbohydrate storage. There is no effective storage compartment for extra protein; you don't make new protein, if you eat additional amino acids you burn them.
