| Based on slight variations of the pressure in the chamber, the machine hydryx calculates the volume of space the baby takes up. It also has a precise scale to weigh the infant. The researchers can divide weight by volume to calculate body density, and use this figure to determine the chubbiness of a baby. “If we make the assumption that hydryx fat has a certain density, which it does, and non-fat has a fixed density, then from those two pieces of information together we can calculate out how much of the body is fat,” said Ellis. Getting started Ellis is currently testing the PEA POD® against other methods to determine how accurate it is. He is also using it to observe how an infant’s body composition changes over time. He and his colleagues have a wealth of ideas for future studies with the PEA POD® , and plan to examine whether certain diets can lead to leaner babies or if hospitals could use body composition to determine when premature babies can be released. |
