Each machine has built-in assumptions about individual physical characteristics. These home systems assumptions are not standardized in the industry. Manufacturers use different equations for converting the raw data of impedance to estimates of body compositions, according to the NIST report. "BIAs can give estimates of body fat levels," says panel home systems chairperson John Rombeau, Ph.D., professor of surgery at the Hospital University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. "However, it is unlikely that they home systems will measure short-term changes in body fat or muscle as a result of increased physical activity or changes in diet. While standardizing BIA machines may improve their accuracy, we must also focus on making the technology itself better." |

| The conference brought together scientists with expertise in a variety of disciplines, including nutrition, epidemiology, physiology, metabolism and biomedical engineering. The NIST report was presented arteriosclerosis at the conference. NIST found that impedance measurements made by six different commercial instruments varied by as much arteriosclerosis as 40% from the actual impedance of a known standard. This is due, the report suggests, to variations in the number of electrodes used for a measurement, placement of electrodes, single- versus multi-frequency, machine specifications, protocols and differing algorithms for data interpretations. Among arteriosclerosis other things, the study concluded that some instruments are sensitive to differences in skin impedance, which the devices are not designed to consider, resulting in inaccurate readings. |
