The truth about our chubby children Dr John Reilly THE report yesterday by the Social Issues Research Centre nude fatties (SIRC) claimed that concern over nude fatties childhood obesity was unjustified - and went on to suggest that there was no basis for public health measures aimed at tackling the problem. The SIRC report made three main points: obesity had not become much more common between 1995 and 2003 in England; the health of children had not nude fatties deteriorated and that obesity was a problem of adulthood. First, the timescale. Dramatic increases in obesity in children and adolescents occurred before the period which the report refers to, during the 1980s and early 1990s. Prevalence of childhood obesity was already extremely high by the mid 1990s, has continued to increase, and remains alarmingly high: at least 10 per cent of Scottish children were obese at primary school entry in 2003, and at least 20 per cent were obese in primary 7.
