Yes, fat people are discriminated against and yes, there is a growing amount of media and money driven hysteria surrounding obesity. But to conflate obesity related medical issues with obesity related cultural and political issues with a simple wave of the hand is irresponsible. To further argue that medical evidence of the dangers of obesity simply don't exist is almost incomprehensible. I am suggesting that you can respect, and support the acceptance of, body diversity without resorting to denying scientific evidence. According chubby gay men to an overwhelming amount of medical literature, obesity is an independent risk factor and a co-morbidity for some of our biggest killers: heart failure (Kenchaiah S, et al; N Engl J Med 2002 Aug 1;347(5):305-13), type 2 diabetes (van Dam RM, et al; Ann Intern Med 2002 Feb 5;136(3):201-209), stroke (Rexrode KM, et al; JAMA 1997 May 21;277(19):1539-45), heart disease (Wilson PW, et al; Arch Intern Med 2002 Sep 9;162(16):1867-72), even some cancers (Deslypere JP; Metabolism 1995 Sep;44(9 Suppl 3):24-7). |
