[emphasis mine; added for clarity] One thing here: Time hasn't based their first sentence here on anything concrete. Fat people aren't healthier than... what? Thin people? Formerly-average-weight people? fatties in lingerie Mosquitoes? And then there's this, to remind us all that being fat - fatties in lingerie I guess - really sucks. (This is new. Have you heard this?) More important, as Flegal readily admits, fatties in lingerie her paper does not attempt to account for the burden of living with the diseases associated with carrying around some extra pounds. The article, like others, seems to really focus on the Center for Consumer Freedom's ad campaign and (essentially) dismisses it. It's frustrating because here we have the message - THE MESSAGE - that has been one of the cores of the modern fat acceptance movement, and it's being pooh-poohed because it's being delivered in part by the food industry. I sincerely think this is a case of throwing out the baby with the (cold!) bathwater.
