| There it was: the dehumanizing shot of fat people's stomachs. The acute fatty liver voiceover? "Now your diet might be tax deductible!" For a moment I considered how acute fatty liver humorous it'd be to see a shot of thin people's stomachs - and how a news editor might deem it ridiculous - but then I checked out the story on cnn.com. As it goes, one can deduct weight loss fees so acute fatty liver long as they're doctor prescribed (okay...) to battle a disease such as obesity (doh!) or high blood pressure. But what's this? "But the cost of diet foods is not deductible, nor are fees paid for weight-loss programs merely to improve appearance or general health." So, if one loses weight because he or she wants to be healthier, it's not deductible; yet if one loses weight because a doctor forces him or her to do so, it's deductible. But... wouldn't a doctor encourage weight loss in that situation because the doctor believes that weight loss will spur on better health? Isn't that an issue of one cancelling out the other? |
