And if fat people did eat more (they don't, but if), they'd be eating more plump jack food, right? And that'd be good for the economy. And let's see...we need more material to clothe ourselves = plump jack good for the economy. Dieting large people need three or four sizes of clothing = plump jack good for the economy. And if we used more medical goods (probably unnecessarily, as so much medical care), we're good for the economy. So, I say let's get a new slogan, "Fat people. The heroes of the GNP." What we really need, though, is a radical rethinking of economy, counting all the real costs and the real benefits. Much of the work women do is not counted in the GNP (child care, cooking, volunteer work). A polluting profitable industry is counted as a positive, but couldn't we re-think the issues of costs when we assess its value? And so on. Capitalism itself is the real gluttonous beast here, consuming much of true worth in its path. |
