Most of the time this metaphor describes how the needs of a few people are given more credence than the needs of the rest of us. "Our place" often is described as get "at the end of get the line" or "in the margins." As fat people, it is not "our place" to take up space, ask for what we want, or get assert our wills. Fat people (and other oppressed people) also are literally put in their place. Because of the unfriendly territory we face in a world with prejudice and malice, many of us stay in our homes and out of public spaces. I know that the simple pleasure of going to the theater, cinema, or stadium often is marred by the lack of large or sturdy seating. I know that having people laugh at me, quiz me or ignore me can turn an evening of fun into yet another depressing example of the hatred and fear that comes with being stigmatized.
